API Gravity/Density
In addition to conducting standard density analysis by ASTM D4052, Triton Analytics has developed methodologies for determining density/API Gravity on very heavy, non liquid hydrocarbons and on limited sample volumes. These techniques employ the high precision density analyses afforded by digital densitometer instrumentation providing reliable results combined with rapid turnaround times.
Sample Volume Requirements:
Standard Density/API Gravity by ASTM D4052: 10 ml
API Gravity by Modified ASTM D4052: 3 ml
Elemental Analyses
To achieve a fundamental knowledge of a hydrocarbon requires identification of its basic elemental composition, i.e. hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur (HCONS). Many times this analysis is performed by direct determination of the carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and sulfur concentrations and then oxygen by difference. Upon request, Triton Analytics can improve the analysis by determining the oxygen content by Neutron Activation, assuring the most reliable values for Ultimate Analysis determination.
Additionally, Triton’s capabilities include full range, high precision elemental analysis via inductively coupled plasma techniques (ICP)

Viscosity
Triton employs state of the art digital instrumentation (Anton Paar SVM 3000) for most routine (-20 to 100°C ) viscosity measurements by ASTM D7042. The SVM 3000 requires small sample volumes and provides significant versatility including high precision multiple temperature analyses. For samples requiring higher analysis temperatures, ASTM D445 or Brookfield Viscosity methods may be utilized.

Kinematic/Dynamic Viscosity by Digital Viscometry (ASTM D7042): 10 ml
Kinematic Viscosity by ASTM D445: 25 ml per temperature requested
Brookfield Viscosity: 100 ml per temperature requested

Total Acid Number (TAN), Basic Nitrogen (TBN), Bromine Number
Triton Analytics routinely performs fundamental titration methods such as:
Total Acid Number (TAN) by ASTM D664, Basic Nitrogen (TBN) by ASTM D2896 and Bromine Number by ASTM D1159. Titrimetry provides as a quick, reliable way to determine fundamental properties such as potential corrosivity or reactivity for various hydrocarbon process streams and for crude oil market valuation. Many refiners use these analyses as a means of screening for potential crude oil adulteration.
