Vapor pressure estimation by Headspace Gas Chromatography (HS/GC) is performed by filling a sealed glass headspace vial half full with the sample of interest, then equilibrating at a specified temperature/ time interval. Once equilibrium is established, an aliquot of the gas phase is delivered to the GC via a Tekmar automated headspace autosampler. A special thick film capillary column allows baseline separation of the C1 through C4 regions. Carbon number regions from C5 through C18 are defined via an n-paraffin standard.
External calibration with fully vaporized standards and the equilibrated vapor of pure n-paraffins allows the quantification of each carbon number region. The HS/GC Vapor method reports total vapor pressure of the sample, as well as partial vapor pressure by carbon number. Where the Reid Vapor Pressure method can give anomalous values from inclusion of dissolved air and water, the HS/GC method is sensitive to only hydrocarbon vapor.
